Oncologists specialize in diagnosing and treating all types of tumors. Tumors can be benign or malignant.

The first type have a much better prognosis, because after their resection they almost never recur and even if they do, they can be surgically removed once more. As opposed to a malignant tumor, which can metastise and spread to other organs, making the disease almost incurable.

In addition, the localization of the tumor greatly affects the outcome. A brain tumor is much more likely to cause harm than a benign lymph node mass.

The spreading of the tumor can occur through blood, lymphatic or cerebrospinal fluid. The prognosis and survival period of different tumors vary. The key to successful treatment is early diagnosis, at which point the tumor can be surgically removed with low risk of recurrence.

The field of oncology includes three major subspecialties: surgical, clinical and radiation.

  • A clinical oncologist uses chemotherapy or different medications, such as targeted therapy.
  • A radiation oncologist treats cancer using radiation therapy.
  • A surgical oncologist surgically removes the tumor and adjacent tissue.

There is also a pediatric oncologist who treats cancer in children. Some types of cancer occur most often in children and teenagers, such as certain brain tumors, osteosarcoma, leukemia and Ewing’s sarcoma.
